Protection
The West Bend Fire Department is a volunteer fire department with 23 active members. The fire department
is lead by a chief, assistant chief, and three captains. The volunteers
have to participate in extensive training and over 450 hours of training
is completed each year. They are trained in HazMat and Incident Command.
The fire department is known for their longevity of their members, with
15 of the members having 10 or more years of service. They hold two
meetings a month, one for training and one business meeting. The department
also has their own Rescue Truck with Jaws of Life and Air Bags. They
also have an ISO rating of 9, which is a very good rating for such a
small town. Mutual Aid Agreements are also intact with Kossuth and Palo
Alto County departments.
The Volunteer Ambulance Crew is also an important
asset to West Bend. They offer a 24 hour, full-time transport service,
and also Advanced Life Support. The crew consists of 21 members; 5 EMT-I's,
11 EMT-B's, 1 First Responder and 4 drivers that are certified in CPR.
We again are fortunate to have such longevity in this crew with
over
128 years of combined experience. It says a great deal for such a small
town to have so many caring individuals who put a lot of time and dedication
into our community.

The West Bend Police Department employs one
full-time Police Chief and one part-time police officer. West Bend prides
itself in having 24 hour police protection for our citizens and many
are businesses, making it a much safer community to live in.
Healthcare
West Bend has available Healthcare with its newly remodeled
clinic. There is one doctor and one nurse practitioner employed at the
clinic. West Bend also has available service of air flight and ambulance.
The community is centrally located with seven hospitals within a one-hour
commute.
The community of West Bend also values their well-trained
and experienced rescue services of the West Bend Ambulance crew and
the West Bend Fire Department. These services are on a volunteer basis
and are committed to serving the community with dedicated individuals.
The physicians at the West Bend Medical Clinic provide continuous comprehensive, quality medical care to their patients.
They offer a wide range of services such as Pediatric Care, Women's
Health Care, Surgeries, Preventative Health Care, Allergy Care, Laboratory/X-Ray,
and Adult/Adolescent General Care, just to name a few. The clinic is
fully equipped and staffed to handle medical emergencies and to provide
the best quality service with the knowledgeable staff on duty.
The West Bend Care Center is an intermediate
care facility located in the northwest corner of West Bend. The facility
has been serving the residents of West Bend and surrounding communities
for over 30 years. Some of the services offered include 24 hour nursing
care, physical rehabilitation, respite care, and meals on wheels. The
West Bend Care Center is a 55-bed facility that offers a variety of
rooms ranging from smaller private rooms to semi-private rooms to vary
large private rooms. The loving staff consists of 40 employees within
the six departments. Community support and involvement are very important
to the care center and the residents that reside there.

The Library is open 6 days a week, 43 hours a week
and was certified at the highest level and is one of 168 certified libraries
in the State of Iowa.
The
Library has a large selection of adult fiction books and based on circulation
and survey results, this is one of the more popular sections. The next
most popular section would be the children's section, which contains
a large amount of books, magazines, puppets, puzzles, tapes and book
and tape combinations. The Library also provides a large quantity of
videos for loan. They have over 700 videos and check out more than 16,000
per year. The Library's collection of books is over 15,000 and they
currently subscribe to 70 periodicals and have over 950 audio selections.
Their annual circulation is near 42,000. The per capita is 53.9.
The West Bend Library has 6 stations that are linked
with Internet services, and these have been available to the public
for more than 3 1/2 years. The library currently has over 250 patrons
with computer cards, and the number continues to grow.
The West Bend Library has a meeting room available
for public use and several local clubs and organizations use it on a
regular basis. It is often used on a single use basis too, whether for
hosting a shower or a congressional town meeting.
